“Blue Heron River Tour is a front row ticket to the world of nature. Our custom built vessel, “Great Blue,” was specifically designed to cruise the quiet and shallow backwater areas where wildlife viewing is best. “
It is Sunday and it’s extremely hot in central Florida with the temperature hitting a high of 90 degrees. I’m dreading walking out of the door in jeans and a t-shirt. My mom determined to make this a day to remember, rushes out to Target to purchase me a light white shirt to wear beneath my new camo romper. As I pull on my romper and fix the hook on my silver sandals I am overcome with excitement and an undying surge of anxious glee.
Yes, this day we are trying something out of the normal routine. We are going on a boat tour to see old Florida. A day filled with glistening water and a breeze that would rock you to sleep. As we get into the car and insert the directions into our Tom Tom the car becomes quiet as my sister nervously reminds us we must be there before 1pm. We look at the clock and it reads 11:15 and instantly our nerves jump into high gear.
You see, we live 45 minutes away and the captain specifically instructed my mom to have me there an hour early because I use a wheelchair. The captain assured my mom I would be boarded before anyone else so we mustn’t be late. Our thoughts began to race and as we hit the road I said a prayer asking that we have a day to remember. And boy did we ever!
As we boarded the boat our captain gave us a spill about the history of Hontoon Landing and why Blue Heron Boats Tours is the best boat tour in Deland Florida. He did not lie. Although this was our first boat ride ever, we were laughing, and oooing and ahhing the entire time. The captain made sure to point out the Great Blue Heron fifteen times just to make sure we knew it was his favorite bird. He joked about being a pirate and refusing to smile for pictures and, he managed to give us the opportunity to see a real life manatee!
The boat ride was two hours long but in those moments it felt like an eternity. The air hitting my face relaxed my aching bones and drifted me off to a peaceful time. A place where my daily struggles could no longer bother me. We rarely get out of the house now due to my illness but Blue Heron Boat Tours made sure that our Sunday was a day to remember.
