Us girls have a love affair with shopping. It doesn’t really matter what we are shopping for, from makeup to fashion we don’t care! Of course, our bank manager sometimes cares, so if you need to start curbing your spending just a little bit, you might have to start getting a little inventive with what you have got. Especially if you are a fashionista.
One of the greatest things about the clothes we buy is that, providing you have 12 different items of clothing, you have far more than 12 different outfits. You just need to get a little creative and, sometimes, a little adventurous.
One item that is bound to be in every girl’s wardrobe is the skinny jean. It doesn’t matter if you have tiny thighs or a little more weight on your butt, the skinny jean seems to flatter all of us if worn the right way. It is also a brilliant item of clothing that can be dressed up and made uber glam, or dressed down to create a relaxed casual. The skinny jean is the base of every punk rock or biker chick look, and can also be super feminine. No surprise then that we see this item of clothing all year round, regardless of the season.
If you have more than 4 pairs of jeans then you probably do have a shopping problem. Who needs more than 4 jeans? Everyone should own a black pair. Everyone should own a blue pair. Maybe you should own a boyfriend jean. You definitely need a white pair, even if you are a little clumsy with your lunch. So if you already have 4 pairs of jeans, put the credit card away sister.
Ok, so what do you usually do with your jeans? I know, it’s a silly question. Except it isn’t that silly. So many of us get stuck in our traditional rut with a certain item, so for many they will use their jeans for a relaxed outfit, team it with a t-shirt and a black jacket or throw a vest top on top and a pair of sneakers. The cool thing about skinny jeans is you can use them as part of a layering outfit and wear them with just about anything. So if you have a beautiful summer tea dress which usually only gets busted out in the summer, you could make the winter season a little more pretty. Throw on the jeans underneath to keep your pins warm and then add a turtleneck, chunky knit on and slip the tea dress over the top. This gives you all the warmth you need but says to the world “I refuse to sink into the season with a dull plop”
When the weather starts to break through a little but it isn’t quite time to bare all, you could remove the layering on top and instead opt for bare arms with a little light jacket to keep the edge off, or better still, a little kimono with ¾ length sleeves. This would work at both ends of the season and is equally as good as one of your summer to fall outfits.
Another great way you can wear the skinny jean is with the ultimate summer must have, the oversized white shirt. We seem to have an obsession with oversized things. From sunglasses to handbags, it appears we crave bigger and better. The oversize shirt is an incredible wardrobe staple and completely versatile. Forget wearing it solo, whilst it will look stunning teamed with rose gold bangles over bare legs with little else, you can also wear it through the spring and autumn seasons in a multitude of ways.
Think about whipping it in at the waist with a large black belt, throwing on your chunky knit turtleneck and getting out the jeans again. For a twist on this look you could leave the shirt open or buttoned. You could even wear the exact same outfit for a week without anyone really noticing. Think about adding a statement colour or logo tee under the shirt with your blue jeans. Or buttoning it right up to the top and wearing it loose over the same blue jeans, but adding a little long line silver necklace. You could also button it up to your breast over a black basic tee, roll the sleeves up to quarter length then wrap a autumnal colour scarf around your neck. Throw on a large brimmed hat and a pair of sunnies and viola, another outfit. As the summer starts to break through you can just ditch the jeans and suit it to the season through your shoes. Thigh high boots will give you a little extra warmth on a chilly spring afternoon. Ankle boots will look totally on trend on a warm but rainy late spring day and gladiator sandals or pretty wedges will see you right through the summer. Perfect. You can also use your white shirt as a cover over your bikini on the beach, teamed with a pair of flipflops then recycle it in the evening by simply buttoning it up and throwing on a killer heel. We actually think you could head out on holiday with pretty much just a bikini and a white shirt, if you have a bunch of shoes and accessories.
Wearing the same outfit in a multitude of ways can help you get a little more daring and creative with the rest of your look. For example if you usually wear your hair down, you may find you start playing with up looks. If you have less time thinking about what you are wearing that day, you will have more time to focus on your looks. Which can be fun. A woman in the U.K decided to wear the same outfit for a whole month. She opted for blue H&M skinny jeans and a box fit white shirt. She then twisted it up with different jackets and t-shirts, lots of cool accessories and various different shoes. One of the things she noticed was how she already knew what she was going to do with the outfit by the evening. So in the morning she just threw it on and then twisted her makeup to bring an even bigger twist to her look. Colleagues said they were amazed she manage to make a completely different look for the whole 30 days of her personal challenge.
If you are lucky enough to be able to wear hot pants in the summer, you probably slip these away as soon as the weather turns down a notch. However they are an excellent crossover item. A short pair of denim pants with a really rough trim look seriously edgy thrown over a pair of black tights. With a biker boot, a basic tee and a little black jacket, you have a look that will see you all the way through fall or head you in from winter to spring. You can do the same with a tailored pair of shorts too. Combining different tight textures or colours depending on where you are going. A thicker pair of grey tights with a roll neck top and a black jacket will look super stylish at work. You can use the thigh high boots to bring a little sexy edge to this look too.
Whilst it is brilliant to have a whole room dedicated to a shoe collection and we appreciate why you needed to buy those Christian Louboutin So Kate in 4 different colours, the truth is you really don’t need to.
Every girl should own two pairs of stiletto shoes. A black pair and a nude pair. Wait, make that three pairs. A red pair, you need a red pair of killer heels. That really is it though. Granted those glittery peep toes were pretty and a pair of colour popping sky scraper heels will add a real statement to your skinny jean, but the truth is if you have a black and a nude pair you can style up any outfit in your wardrobe.
You need one good pair of ankle boots. If you can afford two pairs then make one black and the other brown or a neutral shade, such as an olive green. These can be worn in winter, spring, summer and fall. With trousers, shorts, dresses, tights or bare legs. They will make any outfit look a little more casual but put you right on trend in the office.
We have talked about the thigh high boot a fair bit in this blog. Don’t opt for the tight fit, whilst there is something super slick about a tight fit around your thigh, it is more versatile to go for a looser fit, plus this will be more flattering on the leg. Black is probably the most wearable colour but you could opt for a darker neutral colour instead. Whatever you choose, make sure you have one pair in your wardrobe and it will unlock the door to hundreds of all season looks.
There are loads of other items you can mix up and match for the ultimate all year round wardrobe. These are just scratching the surface of what is possible. So if your bank balance is looking a little too close to the red. Get stuck into what you have and maybe try the 30 day single outfit challenge yourself.
