The title of this may be somewhat confusing initially. So much of the advice that you see about the aging process is focused on trying to stop it, grind to a halt, bathe in a fountain of youth and never surrender it.
There is a certain power to embracing the aging process, however. It might mean quite a radical departure from the way you have thought about the advancing years in the past – but there’s nothing wrong with investigating your thoughts and potentially reevaluating them. While it might not come easily, there are so many reasons to see your aging as a positive process that it would be a shame not to try, wouldn’t it?
#1 – It’s Going To Happen
This is the ultimate truth: no matter how much you try and stave off the aging process, it’s going to happen. You’re fighting against biology. No matter how many creams you apply, exercises you do, and foods you eat… you’re going to get older. If you try and grind yourself in the you of right now (or even the you of a decade ago) then you’re fighting a losing battle – so what’s the point in setting yourself up for failure?
#2 – Youth Isn’t The Only Way You Can Be Beautiful
No one would be surprised if you do think that way. Youth is sold so often as the holy grail of beauty and style, right down to the biannual lists of the clothes women over the age of 30 shouldn’t wear and the beauty products they shouldn’t use. (It’s worth noting most of this lists will have been written by fashion and style editors over the age of 30 themselves!)
While you may have a few wrinkles, the beginnings of a turkey neck, and a few age spots on your hands – that doesn’t mean that can’t be beautiful. No, it’s not the perfect beauty we see in advertisements, but then again you don’t have a team of stylists following you around – the women in the adverts don’t look like that either!
#3 – With Age Comes Experience
We all make stupid decisions when we’re young, hold opinions we now find baffling, and put importance on things we now see as irrelevant. With age comes wisdom – it’s a cliché because it’s a reality.
If you are trying to act or look young in the name of recapturing what you see as your former glory, then you’re ignoring the glory that you could be now. You’re ignoring the fact that you are the sum of your experiences, your hardships, your triumphs – and you’re smarter for it. Being young has its advantages, but it also denies you a lot of clarity when it comes to making good decisions. Being older, you have the advantage of experience, which seems a fair exchange for a few lines on your face.
#4 – Redefine Beauty
If your concerns about beauty are more based on your physical appearance, then you might need to reset your mind. You’re too used to seeing images that equate beauty with youth; but if you seek out older fashion and style, you’ll quickly see that there are plenty of ways to redefine the way that you think about beauty and how you can find confidence in the changing – but still wonderful – you.
