One of my dreams has always been to open an online shop to sell inspirational clothing, prints, and mugs. But, due to various reasons I never took the leap of faith and started that dream online shop. Because of this reason I like to peruse successful online shops to find out how they turn their dreams into reality. Today’s interview is just that, a couple who pulled together to turn their dream into a success.
A husband and wife duo, Alison and Bradley have beat the odds to create an online business that is thriving. With Allison’s graphic design background and Bradley’s business marketing degree, Allison Bradley Prints was destined to succeed. Let us find out how Allison Bradley was created and the advice they would give to new entrepreneur’s.
Emerald: Please tell us when and how Allison Bradley Prints were created?
AB: I created Allison Bradley Prints in October 2016 after I attended a little craft fair in my town. I brought home some items and we realized I could start making my own prints instead of having to buy them. With Brad’s encouragement we decided to start a business with my experience and background in graphic design and Brad’s background in business.
Emerald: Did anything scare you about starting your own business?
AB: Having my work be accepted and successful was a huge scare for me when we started. After all, I was putting my taste and designs out for the public to see and criticize – so scary! Brad actually signed me up for a craft trade show before I had really started making prints – I was so terrified but thankful that he pushed me to do it. The show turned out to be a success and we have had nothing but support and encouragement so far, which we are so thankful for!
Emerald: What is it like working with your spouse?
AB: Working together has been perfect for us. Brad is the encouragement I need when I feel overwhelmed or uncertain about anything. It has been so nice for me to focus on the designing and printing process while Brad takes care of the business side of things – something I have no knowledge about. We are both vital to the success of our business and that keeps us working together and progressing.
“Don’t do it alone! Two minds are always better than one”
Emerald: You are both college educated. How do you feel your educational background has helped your business to succeed?
AB: Our education has been extremely helpful in the success of our business. Brad’s expertise in marketing is really what has made the difference for us. One thing school gave us is a crave for learning and developing new skills. That crave for development and learning has played a huge part as we’ve started this journey of running and operating our own business.
Emerald: To date what is your most popular print in the store?
AB: Our most popular print is The State Print – it’s also one of my favorites! Our customers can customize it to wherever they live or places they have visited and that makes it so fun and personable.
Emerald: Has adding custom orders increased your sales? If so, in what way?
AB: Definitely yes! A lot of the time customers have a specific vision in their head of the print they are looking for. It has helped our business to be able to create that for them – especially when they don’t see it in our print store. It also makes us so happy when we can bring our customers vision to life.
Emerald: What advice would you give someone hoping to become an entrepreneur?
AB: Don’t do it alone! Two minds are always better than one and it helps you to delegate responsibility so you don’t get overwhelmed and stressed out.
